Personal Statement:
I started the business Pebblecubes in January 2005, making gabion-style flowerpot holders and candle holders, selling them mainly at Flower Shows.
I have been making ceramics for several years, drawing inspiration from nature and previous experiences. After graduating from University College, Cardiff in 1980 with a Zoology degree, I tried my hand at pest control and then teaching, before getting the chance to work in a field which had hitherto been my hobby – animation.
An early plasticine animation film of mine was overall winner in the 1978 Welsh International Amateur Film Festival, but as a professional I was able to work on several children’s TV series including the S4C/BBC collaborations Joshua Jones, Star Hill Ponies and, most notably, Fireman Sam.
By 1992 I needed a break from the intensity of animation, and took a course in Fine Art at Carmarthenshire College of Technology and Art. My affinity for 3D work soon came to the fore and I have made many sculptures since, using a variety of materials. In 1996 I was fortunate enough to have a design selected as the winner in a competition run by Coca-cola, which was made into an 8ft sculpture and taken to Atlanta as Britain’s entry in the Olympic Salute to Folk Art Exhibition, which ran alongside the Games.
Industrial materials are often incorporated into my work; nails and bolts seem to combine inevitably into organic forms, while making things with clay is becoming increasingly important to me.
Having moved to Stroud this year, it is great to find such an artistic community here.
